What is a Periodontal Disease?

oral periodontal disease, also known as pyorrhea or gum disease, is one of the most common systemic infections known to mankind. in fact, over 75 percent of american adults over the age of 35 have some form of periodontal disease. this is quite alarming, since most individuals do not believe that they have any form of periodontal disease. most all forms of periodontal diseases tend to be unnoticed by the patient until the later stages of the disease process. untreated, periodontal disease can lead to bad breath, loosening of teeth, redness and swelling of the gums, gum recession and eventually tooth loss. despite this, periodontal diseases are some of the most preventable and treatable diseases.
